Easiest Diet Known To Man – Interview with Brad Pilon
I did this interview with Brad Pilon quite a while ago, but thought I’d re-post it because it covers something everybody wants to know – how to eat/what to eat/what not to eat, etc. to lose weight. Brad’s approach is, for lack of a better term, idiot proof. It is the simplest and easiest way to diet I’ve ever come across and I absolutely love it.
I’ve been fasting once a week for over 2 years and absolutely love it. My fasting days are incredibly productive. My energy levels are high. I feel more “alive” and don’t see a time when I don’t fast once per week.
So please read on and let Brad’s words simmer in your brain. There’s a lot of “stuff” out there leading you to believe that if you fail to eat something for 3 hours, your metabolism will crash and burn and you’ll get fat. So silly. That’s what Brad has affectionately tagged “Obsessive Compulsive Eating” and that’s the perfect term.

Ed: Why fasting? It almost sounds too simple.
Brad: I think the fact that fasting is so simple is why it works so well.
Weight loss should not be complicated. In fact, it’s my opinion that the ease of a diet program typically is what decides it’s success.
If a diet is too hard and too restrictive then most people will have a hard time following it for long periods of time. However, if a diet plan is easy and simplistic then people can follow it for long periods of time without it being restrictive or intrusive on their lifestyle, and in my opinion this is the key to long lasting weight loss success.
Ed: I couldn’t agree with you more with that last statement. What are you supposed to do when you reach your goal weight? Should you keep fasting?
Brad: It really depends on the person. For me, I still fast once a week even while I’m around my goal weight. This allows me a greater freedom to eat what I want when I am not fasting. I also like to continue fasting even when I’m not trying to lose weight because there are definitely health benefits to fasting beyond simply weight loss.
Ed: That’s good to hear because I’ve gotten that question from a lot of my clients. They want to know what they’re supposed to do once they reach their goal. It’s nice to hear that you personally follow your own advice. And personally I’ve seen tremendous results while fasting over the past few months, as has my wife. All of my fat lost has come from my gut, which is awesome! I know that’s not a question, but I just wanted to tell you that.
Brad: That’s great news! I love all the positive feedback I get from people who are following the Eat Stop Eat lifestyle – it makes all the hard work worthwhile.
Ed: I’ve noticed that on my fasting days I’ve learned a lot about what my body “likes” and “doesn’t like” in terms of the last food I eat before my fast starts and the first food I eat when I break the fast.
If I eat a certain food the night before my fast, it makes it very difficult to sustain the fast right off the bat the next morning and certain foods make me feel horribly if I eat them when I break my fast. Have you had similar results with other people or even yourself?
Brad: You’ve hit on what I believe to be the most underrated benefit of fasting – it allows you to truly understand your relationship with food.
By taking 24 hours off from eating you start to understand what cues make you want to eat, which habits you have that are centered around food and which foods tend to agree with you and not agree with you.
Ed: I think that’s something that many people don’t understand about themselves. They just eat. The troubling thing is that there are a lot of foods our bodies don’t like and it seems as though fasting is a great way to figure those things out.
Ed: I’ve told my readers before that you’re a research hound, that in Eat Stop Eat you go over a lot of research studies pertaining to diet and nutrition. Have you found any new research pertaining to fasting specifically or that you can point to and say “I told you so.”?
Brad: Definitely. I just finished the Eat Stop Eat Advanced Audio files which cover all of the research behind short-term fasting that has been published up to July of 2008. I’m also working on a very exciting project that actually covers forgotten research from the early 1900’s – this one is super exciting and is called “why diets stop working” should be really good stuff.
Ed: Sounds good. It’s kind of funny to hear that you have research from the early 1900’s. I never would’ve thought they did such studies back then.
Brad: I have seen no reason to suggest you shouldn’t workout on your fasting days – unless you are training for a marathon or some other ultra-endurance even.
When it comes to weight training workouts, I have my best workouts on my fast days..I’m not sure why, most likely it’s just a matter of personal preference but I do my heaviest lifting and my hardest conditioning on my fasting days and see a tremendous benefit from that. I’ve seen your workouts before and they would be perfect on fasting days.
Ed: Thank you very much Brad. And it’s good to hear that you get some of your best workouts in on fasting days. I know I do as well, although I’ve learned that my body prefers bodyweight only workouts on my fasting days as opposed to weight training. I don’t know why, that’s just the way it is.
I couldn’t recommend Brad’s Eat Stop Eat program more if you really want an idiot proof diet. It is by far the easiest “diet” to follow because it takes no thinking and no planning whatsoever. It lets you live a little and eat some of your favorite foods and still lose fat…and that’s not just infomercial type hype. It’s true.
