Gratuitous “I’m Hot Stuff” Thursday

Thursday, March 19th, 2009

Maren has decided she likes to wear sunglasses, carry multiple purses and wear heels.  Granted the heels are only 1/2 inch tall, she still wears them well.

She’s only 2 and I’m already worried about going broke in her teen years.  I seriously doubt my abilities to say “No” when the time comes.  Maybe I should start practicing now so that maybe by then I’ll have a little backbone.

Doubtful.

5 Reasons To Do Home Workouts Instead Of Joining A Gym

Wednesday, March 18th, 2009

There’s no mystery to my feelings on health clubs and gyms.

I haven’t used one for close to 10 years (except a hotel gym while traveling and that’s even rare given my feelings for bodyweight workouts).

I really don’t like them and luckily more parents are sharing my disdain for health clubs and giving home workouts a try instead.

But to illustrate why I think health clubs and gyms are worthless, especially when you can get better workouts done at home in a fraction of the time, I’ve come up with a little “Top 5” list for you. Read More→

3 Foods To Avoid For Weight Loss

Monday, March 16th, 2009

Last week a reader asked me about some foods he should avoid it he wants to lose weight.

He’s seen a lot of conflicting things being marketed about foods and weight loss and was a little confused so he wanted some simple and straightforward answers.

This list can be quite large depending upon where you live or what your current eating habits are, but I narrowed this list down to 3. Read More→

10 Minute Bodyweight Workout and Abs Workout Videos

Tuesday, March 10th, 2009

Want to know how to make a fit fella feel like an out-of-shape toad?  Take him to the mountains and make him do a bodyweight workout as soon as you get there.

Andrea and I headed up to the mountains of Colorado over the weekend because I had a business meeting and after sitting in the car for 8 hours, I needed to do something to get me loosened up and get the aches out of my muscles.

I hadn’t done a workout for the day because it seemed as though I was in slow motion that morning, so I thought it would be a good way to clear my head and get a second wind before we headed out for dinner.

So while Andrea was getting cleaned up I decided to do a body-weight workout out in the living room.

10 minutes later, I stumbled into the bedroom panting like a fat kid chasing after the ice cream truck in the middle of August (bad joke…sorry). Read More→

Fat Burning Food Day 9…More Nuts

Friday, March 6th, 2009

Today’s fat burning food is one of my favorites…cashews.

I l-o-v-e cashews.  Love ‘em, love ‘em, love ‘em.

They taste so dang good, and the good thing about cashews is that they’re good for you, in moderation.

That’s the key to this fat burning food.  They’re a little calorie dense, as most nuts are, but cashews are a little calorie dense than other nuts.

Don’t let the fact that they’re calorie dense deter you from eating this fat burning food, or any other nut because there are studies showing that people who eat nuts regularly are less susceptible to weight gain than the non-nut eating crowd.

But, eat in moderation.  Don’t shove them in your mouth by the handful.  Have a handful as a snack along with some yogurt, an apple, pear, or other piece of fruit.

One of my favorite ways to eat cashews is the homemade trail mix I keep at my office.  It’s pretty simple – just throw a bunch of almonds cashews, raisins, craisins, a bag of M&M’s (small bag, not the ½ pounder or you will turn into a tub of goo), and maybe some peanuts or Cinnamon Life Cereal because I love that stuff.

Just like all nuts, cashews are loaded with heart-healthy monounsaturated fats.

Plus they’re high in magnesium.  Not many people know the importance of magnesium for bone health, but without it calcium wouldn’t be used the way it is.

Not only that, but insufficient magnesium can cause muscle spasms, high blood pressure, muscle cramps, migraine headaches and muscle tension and soreness.

The good thing is that just ¼ cup of cashews (1 serving) gives you over 20% of your daily magnesium needs.

You can eat cashews raw, include them in a homemade trail mix (like me), add them to salads, saute them with some veggies, get some cashew butter and add that to your toast or make a PB&J (except it’s cashew butter, not peanut butter), add the cashew butter to some sliced apples, etc.

But, like I said, cashews are calorie dense so be careful with how much you eat…

…but don’t let the fact that they’re calorie-dense scare you away from enjoying this fat burning food.

I had an enlightening conversation with a couple of my lady boot campers this week about exercising hard and “cheating” and I thought you might also find this little exchange useful.

Here was question #1:

“If I’m working hard and exercising a lot, can I relax my eating habits?”

Weekly Workout Wrap-up

Friday, February 27th, 2009

I haven’t done a very good job lately at updating what my workouts are looking like, so I’ll play a little catch-up.

I have been mixing my 10 minute workouts in with workouts geared more towards strength and muscle building.  Some will tell you that you shouldn’t concentrate on more than one thing at once, which is true to a point, but I’ve increased my deadlift by 30 pounds, my bench press by 15 pounds, and I’ve gained 15 pounds while maintaining a 31 inch waist.

Not too shabby if you ask me.  One of the biggest reasons I’ve been able to gain so much weight and strength is that I’ve cut down on the amount of work I do.

I love working out.  I love doing my 10 minute workouts and I enjoy following along with the ladies in my boot camps, but it just gets to be too much for the body to handle.

In the Fall/early Winter, I was doing too much and lost a lot of weight – and most of it wasn’t fat, given I didn’t have much fat to lose.  I lost a lot of muscle and it showed.  Read More→

Today’s fat burning food is Sweet Potato.

I know I’ve said this before, but every single time I write an opening sentence like that I feel like I’m on Sesame Street or Mr. Roger’s Neighborhood.

The number of the day is 5.

I think you can tell who the parents are when they begin speaking like kid’s shows or begin talking to adults like they’re children.  Putting pitches in their voice to emphasize certain things, asking if they need help tying their shoes, wiping your buddy’s boogers, etc.

But I digress. Read More→
