“This has to be a joke.”

That’s the tamed down and censored version of what went through my head last week when a report came out alerting consumers to stop using one of the most popular brands of diet pills, Hydroxycut, because there have been reports linking it to liver damage and even a death.

Here’s a direct quote from the FDA’s alert:  “FDA has received 23 reports of serious health problems ranging from jaundice and elevated liver enzymes, an indicator of potential liver injury, to liver damage requiring liver transplant. One death due to liver failure has been reported to FDA. Other health problems reported include seizures; cardiovascular disorders; and rhabdomyolysis, a type of muscle damage that can lead to other serious health problems such as kidney failure.”

Are you freaking kidding me?!!

It wasn’t that long ago that the same diet pill, along with many others, were embroiled in wrongful death lawsuits because of ephedra, which then lead to a ban on ephedra in all diet pills (which has quietly been removed and some supplement companies are using it again).

This whole thing boggles my mind because for the most part, these diet pills do absolutely nothing (other than causing major health problems evidently).

One of the big selling points with these worthless pills is that they raise your metabolism, which will help you burn fat and lose weight.

Not quite the whole truth and nothing but the truth, so help them God (I’m sure they’ll have to be getting used to uttering those words given the huge increase in legal cases).

They’re all loaded with caffeine and other stimulants, which will raise your metabolism a little bit, but pretty soon your body gets used to it and then the extra calorie burning stops.

And this happens a lot quicker than you think.

There goes one purported benefit down the toilet.

Another thing these pills do very well that they don’t tell you is they make you lose water weight.

That’s what everyone loses in the first week when taking these things.

Our bodies hold A LOT of water and most of it is necessary for life, but some of it just hangs around serving no other purpose than to make you jiggly.

It’s not unhealthy and it’s something that you can take care of very easily without taking a dangerous supplement by drinking more water and laying off other drinks and foods that make you retain water.

But these supplements are loaded with so much caffeine and one of its primary effects is as a diuretic – meaning they make you go pee…sometimes A LOT in the first few days.

You lose weight and you’re happy.

You think it’s fat, but it’s not…it’s just water and it may come back just as soon as it left.

Doesn’t matter, though because you’re hooked and continue taking that supplement thinking it works, when all it did was make you use the bathroom more.

I won’t even get into that new one Alli and its “treatment effects”, which is just a different term for “side effects.”

Here’s a hint about those wonderful “treatment effects”, though…

…carry an extra pair of pants with you because you just may need them if you laugh too hard, cough, sneeze, or do any heavy lifting – and they tell you such right on the label!

So, here are your options:

Take Hydroxycut, which can cause severe liver damage and death.  Take some other pill that will make you pee more, or take some new “FDA approved” diet pill that will make you soil your pants…all for the low, low cost of $59.99/month.

Or you could save your money and learn how to go about things the right way.

By setting aside a limited period of time every day to workout from home – 10 minutes sounds nice.

Learn the proper ways to eat for fat loss, without going crazy on some fad diet and cutting out all your favorite foods – which will just lead to insanity or binge eating or just being a pain in the butt to the people who love you.

Which option sounds the best?

Have a great day!

10 Minute Workouts…Can You Really Lose Weight With Them?

10 Minute Workouts. Do They Work?

10 Minute Workouts. Do They Work?

One of the things I’m always amazed by is the people who constantly question whether you can really achieve results with a 10-minute workout.

Please don’t misunderstand, I don’t mean that in a bad way.  It’s not their fault they’ve been told for years you have to workout for 30-60 minutes (or longer) every day if you want to lose weight and get in better shape.

In fact, just today I was reading in a magazine about some hot young Hollywood starlet’s workout where her trainer said she worked out 2 hours a day, 5 days a week to get and maintain her body.

Who the hell has that much time to workout?

I do this for a living and there’s no way I can carve that much time out of my day to devote to a fat loss workout!

So why should I expect you to try and workout for a fraction of that time when I know you’ve got way too many things going on and you’re not going to stick to it?

Why can’t I come up with a great workout that only takes 10 minutes?  Why can’t I come up with something that cuts through all the crap and only uses the most effective fat loss exercises, can be done from home using only dumbbells and your own bodyweight, and more importantly be something that you will actually do?

Time is, by far, the biggest excuse and objection to people working out.  Yet when I give someone a workout that totally obliterates that excuse, they’re doubtful.

Why not try?

In fact, that brings to mind an email I received a little over a month ago from a female client who was really excited to try my 10-minute workouts, but was still skeptical.

She’d been so used to working out for 60 minutes that she didn’t think she could get the results she wanted and was wondering if there was anything I could do to extend the 10 minute workouts and make them longer.

I flat out told her no.

I told her to stick with the 10-minute workouts for a month.

She begrudgingly took my advice and stuck with the 10-minute workouts and didn’t step on her treadmill or use their giant home gym for an entire month.

Here’s what she told me last week, “Ed, I didn’t think it would work, but it did.  I was very skeptical for about a week, then I started to notice a few things.  I had more energy, I was actually doing the workouts on a consistent basis (which has NEVER happened before), and I was getting a lot stronger…in only a couple weeks.

Now it’s been a month and I’m totally floored and amazed!  I have lost 6 pounds (I don’t have much to lose), my waist has shrunk, my hips are smaller and I’m standing taller with better posture!

I’m hooked and you’ve made a believer out of me.  I fully expected to be able to tell you that you were wrong, but it was me who was wrong!”

So what do you think?  Does that sound like you?  Are you skeptical about a 10 minute workout?

All that I ask is you give my 3-week 10-minute workout a try.  It’s free and I guarantee you’ll see results.

You’ll see results because you cut out your biggest excuse and because the workouts are awesome (I designed them after all).

What else do you have to lose besides some extra fat and some false beliefs?

Have a great day!

Are You A Food Pervert?

Monday, April 20th, 2009
Don't be a food pervert and don't use your boobs as a cup holder

Don't be a food pervert and don't use your boobs as a cup holder

Last week I was giving a presentation to a group of moms and I was talking about how important it is to eat nuts like almonds and peanuts when trying to lose weight.

It was right then that one of the moms raised her hand.

I knew it was coming.  I knew what the question was before she asked…

“Does it matter what kind of almonds I eat?”  “My husband likes to make smoked almonds, are those OK?”

No, those are not OK if you are trying to lose weight and get more toned.

That’s what I mean when I say food perversion.

The food industry (and some crafty cooks) has taken foods that are healthy, fat-burning foods, and turned them into massive weight gain bombs.

Nuts are just one example, and it’s one of the reasons I used to be so hesitant about recommending peanuts.

Peanuts, in their raw, unadulterated state, are awesome fat burning foods.  They’re high in fiber, protein and healthy fats.

But the food industry has perverted them into unhealthy calorie bombs.

Honey roasted, smoked, salted, jalapeno flavored are just some of the examples of the perverted peanuts.

The average consumer doesn’t think they’re unhealthy because they’re peanuts and peanuts are supposed to be OK.

What they don’t know is that they’ve just added hundreds of unnecessary calories that will wind up sitting right on top of their waistline.

The same thing has happened with yogurt.  Food manufacturers add all sorts of stuff to yogurt and them market it specifically to women or kids.  The bad thing is that they’re loaded with sugars, artificial flavorings and colorings and are just plain bad for you.

Even if they added fruit to the yogurt, they more than likely added sugar to make it actually taste like the fruit’s supposed to taste, as opposed to the rotting glob of strawberry you are actually getting.

Many dehydrated fruits have sugar, or artificial sweeteners and other additives, added to them like certain brands of raisins, craisins, apple and banana chips, etc.

The really bad thing is that many of these “good for you foods” are marketed to our kids.

Food manufacturers take what us parents view to be a health food, then twist and pervert its nutrients to turn it into a glorified candy bar and we’re none the wiser…

…unless you pay attention.

That’s the only way to combat food perversion.

You have to pay attention when shopping.  Don’t grab the first thing off the shelf with the pretty packaging.  Look at the ingredients and make sure it’s OK.

Buy the REAL versions of the food instead of the perverted ones.

No sugar added yogurts.

Real fruit.

Raw nuts – which can be bought in bulk and save you loads of money.

Nobody wants to be viewed as a pervert, so don’t be a food pervert.

Have a great day!

3 Easy Diet Tips

Monday, April 13th, 2009

I don’t know about you, but I had a pretty good weekend.

Because of the holiday we had lots of family time, which was nice.  We ate a lot of good food (too much by me) and got to spend some quality time together, which in this day and age doesn’t happen very often.

I also spent some time returning emails from readers having trouble with their eating habits.

That’s easy to understand because there’s a lot of misinformation when it comes to weight loss and other folks are just making it hard on themselves.
I try to make things as easy as possible when it comes to eating and weight loss.

The less thinking that has to happen, the better.

Here are a few very easy tips to stick to when it comes to diets, losing fat and being healthy. Read More→

How Much Photoshopping and Retouching Happens In Magazines?

Tuesday, March 31st, 2009

Do you really think all those pictures in magazines or on some websites are legit?

Do they photoshop and re-touch those photos before putting them in the mags?

If so, how much?

Maybe a little like clearing up some blemishes and fixing lighting.

Or maybe a lot like stripping a couple inches off your waist, carving in some abs, shrinking the thighs, etc.

It all depends actually, but to think that those pictures you’re seeing in the magazines aren’t retouched and photoshopped is ridiculous.

I found this awesome video made by diet.com where they had a photographer and re-toucher take some pictures of a woman in a bikini and re-touch those images.  It’s kinda freaky when you think about it.

I always knew they did such things, but never knew it was to such an extent.

Watch and be amazed, pissed off and maybe feel a little better knowing that those models and celebrities aren’t as hot or physically perfect as they appear.

10 Minute Fat Loss Workout and Abs Workout Videos

Monday, March 30th, 2009

Want to know how to embarrass a personal trainer?  Watch him eat a cheeseburger, then watch his reaction when he notices he got mustard all over his nice black wool coat!

Oy.

Andrea and I were on our way home from a date night on Saturday and needed to get smaller bills to pay the babysitter (my niece), so I thought it would be a good idea to get a cheeseburger.

Always good for a personal trainer to admit such things.

I devoured the thing, but splattered mustard on my jacket…and neither my wife nor my niece told me!

Serves me right for getting the burger.

Anyway, I thought I’d share with you the workouts I did today.  One is a 10-minute home workout, the other is a 4 minute abs workout.

I did the 10-minute fat loss workout first, followed by the 4-minute abs workout.  Then I rested a few minutes and repeated.

It took a little over 30 minutes to complete and it felt awesome.

10-minute circuit workout:  If you can’t do the push-up variation in the video, substitute it with an easier one.

4 minute abs workout:

Have a great day!

Just because a fat loss workout is hard doesn’t necessarily mean it’s a good workout.

Did that statement make sense?

I’ll give you an example.  Let’s say you go to an exercise class and they make you do a triceps exercise for 3 minutes straight (like kickbacks).  That is very hard to do, but that doesn’t make it a good workout.

Any goober in spandex and a tank top can make a fat loss workout difficult.

That’s easy.

Make the muscles burn.  Slap a bunch of exercises together that make the person think they’re working hard and bam there’s a hard workout.

But is that workout a good workout?

Does it make you get closer to your goals or just make you feel good for a day about how “hard” you worked?

Take for instance this circuit workout I did today:

1A)  Decline Push-up – 15 reps
1B)  DB Reverse Lunge – 8 reps per leg
1C)  Stability Ball Jack Knife – 12 reps
1D)  DB Rear Flies – 10 reps
1E)  DB Incline Chest Press – 10 reps
1F)  Burpees – 10 reps

I did as many total circuits as I could in 15 minutes (I know most workouts I give you only take 10 minutes, but I wanted to go a little longer on this one), tried to rest the least amount possible and I felt awesome afterward.

There were only 6 exercises in that circuit, yet it worked virtually every muscle in my body.

The key to a really good fat loss workout is making it difficult enough to see results (duh!), yet making sure you work the body in a way that you can still function.

By “function” I mean that you can complete the workout with proper form AND still get on with your day.

Not only that, but a good workout also takes into account the fact that muscles need rest.  If you keep working the same muscles, in the same way, day-after-day and week-after-week, without resting or changing things up a bit, not only will you not see the results you’re after, but you could start to get achy, tired and irritable.

The muscles you work need rest.  That’s one big key that many people overlook in their workout programs.

Do your workouts adhere to those rules and do they look like the one I just showed you or are you in the rut of making a workout seem “hard” when it’s actually pretty worthless?

Have a great day!

Ed

P.S. – All the workouts in Fat Loss To Go are designed to not only make you work hard, but they’re designed in a way that you can still function, rest and progress the way you’re supposed to.  The workouts change every 3 weeks so you never get stuck in a rut and there are 6 months of workouts included.

A Wonderful Fruit Is Today’s Fat Burning Food

Friday, March 20th, 2009

Sorry for missing last week’s edition of fat burning foods.  Don’t know why, but I didn’t feel like writing much last week.

Oh well, movin’ on.

Today’s fat burning food is…drum roll please…

Apples!

I don’t know why it’s taken me so long to do apples for my fat burning food series.

I eat at least 2 of them a day for God’s sake.

Can you give me one good reason not to eat apples every single day of your life?

They’re one of the most portable foods known to man.  Come to think of it, I’ve got one sitting in the cup holder of my car that I’ll probably eat on my way home today.  I’ll have to hide it from Maren, though because she likes apples just as much as me and she’ll mooch if she sees me eating it.

I’m not a good food sharer.  Even with my own daughter.  How bad is that? Read More→
